Women’s Equality Day celebrates the anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the United States’ Constitution on August 26, 1920.

The amendment granted women the right to vote for the first time and was a result of the women’s suffrage movement in the country.

On Sunday, August 26, 2018, #VAratifyERA launches its campaign for Virginia’s ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) on Women’s Equality Day with screenings of “Iron Jawed Angels” (IJA) across the state.

Filmed in Richmond, the film follows suffragist Alice Paul (played by Hilary Swank), a key leader behind the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote nearly 100 years ago on August 26, 1920.

#VAratifyERA challenges Virginians to finish Alice Paul’s vision of full equality regardless of sex by demanding passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (which she wrote) in our next General Assembly session. Nevada ratified last year, and Illinois this past March, leaving the nation just one state short of the 38 required to give women full protection under the Constitution. All eyes are on Virginia!

Throughout the state, legislators and civic leaders will host screenings. This screening will be hosted by Senator Mamie E. Locke, Senator L. Louise Lucas, and Delegate Jeion A. Ward. Tickets are free and there will be a short conversation after the credits are finished.
